How I Got Started in Surface Pattern Design

I’ve always loved artsy things, but my digital creative journey really started in 2019 when I got an iPad and fell headfirst into learning modern calligraphy. I was obsessed. I practiced constantly, bought all the brushes, took all the Skillshare classes, became a founding member of Loveleigh Loops — the whole thing.

Eventually, I felt like I had “figured it out,” and my focus started to shift. I wanted to draw better. I wanted to explore Procreate beyond just lettering. But when I tried to take my calligraphy off-screen and into the real world, my carpal tunnel had other plans. So I pivoted.

Like any good millennial creative, I became slightly addicted to buying passive income courses…And in 2024, I stumbled on the “5 Day Leverage Your Art” challenge… and that was it. Everything clicked. I found surface pattern design, and I’ve been completely hooked ever since.

Now I get to combine everything I love, drawing, color, bows, and a little bit of sass, into patterns that make people smile. It’s been the most unexpected, joy-filled creative pivot, and I’m so glad I followed it.

And yes, I’m still constantly buying classes to learn more — because you can never stop improving.
